Oak Island Waterway Homes

The barrier island now called Oak Island was actually founded in 1999 when Long Beach and Yaupon Beach were combined into the city. Much of the island itself is undeveloped, used as protected nature preserves, and the town also extends across the Intracoastal Waterway onto the mainland. It is easily accessed by way of Highway 211, and you'll find some of the most exclusive master-planned golf course communities all along the highway from the town of Bolivia near Hwy 17 and through St James nearer to the water. The developed portion of Oak Island beach is 12 miles long, ending with Caswell Beach to the northeast.

The beach is a bit more tourism oriented than its neighbor Holden Beach, offering condos and hotels in addition to the rental beach houses that are still plentiful. Like Holden, the actual island borders both the ocean and the Intracoastal Waterway, and there are many homes with private boat docks facing the western side also. There are two fishing piers on OaK Island, one being owned by the city, and the other a regular public pier. Both offer fishing and just walking to enjoy the view. Rental homes near the piers are always popular.

Map of Oak Island NC

Homes along the beach and Waterway are expensive, usually near a million or more. As you cross to the mainland, you'll find inexpensive homes as well as the beautiful estate homes in the golfing communities. Another water body attractive for homes is Lockwoods Folly Inlet, which separates Holden and Oak Island to its west. The planned community of Lockwoods Folly is built around this inlet, and offers more elegant homes with community amenities.

Homes on Oak Island Point

As you leave the island for the mainland, homes get less expensive and more diverse, offering a lifestyle for the more budget minded. See our community pages or call me to take a tour of the homes on Oak Island. I will be glad to help you find your dream home at the beach!
